One of my favorite quotes is Einstein’s definition of Insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
I’ve been refereeing high school soccer for 20 years. At the beginning of every high school soccer season, our high school referee assignor has a meeting and tells us that he met with the high school coaches who are very dissatisfied with the referees last year. We sit there thinking “whatever, does not apply to me, he must be talking about someone else in the room.” Towards the end of the season, we have another meeting, and our referee assignor tells us that he had another meeting with the high school coaches, and they are very, very dissatisfied with the quality of refereeing (especially the boys coaches, for some reason they think we’re harder on the boys than the girls). So we have another short clinic on player management, misconduct, signals, and we move on to talk about playoff assignments.
What’s wrong with this picture?
YOU’re doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results!” This is not just about high school, it’s pervasive throughout every competitive and recreational league in US Soccer. The majority of registered referees are not getting the development they need to improve their refereeing skills. They are in the trenches every weekend, every tournament, doing the same thing over and over again. Wouldn’t it be great if they could have a professional Referee Assessor provide him or her with feedback on their strengths, areas of improvement, and inspire them to reach their true potential? Wouldn’t it be great if you weren’t inundated with e-mail complaints every Monday morning from coaches and parents? Reward your Referees with positive reinforcement with our professional services. Help them realize their potential, and in the long run, it’ll pay dividends for your program.
Every week I receive messages from league referee assignors begging for referees to fill the empty slots.
The root cause is because 70% of their youth referees quit every year because you cannot pay them enough to put up with screaming coaches and parents. No one has ever taught them the art of managing coaches, players and sideline parents. At the adult level, many parents refuse to become referees because they don’t want to deal with the pressure. I was my granddaughter’s team referee, which helped lower the team’s registration fees, because the girls dad’s, all half my age, were afraid of doing U10 boys and girls matches.
Most clinics consist of 20+ kids and 1-2 adults. Our program is designed to fill your Grade 8 Referee Clinics with able-bodied parents who will be there for years to come!
The NorCal Referee Program provides one-on-one direction and guidance to any and all of your league referees. The benefits are:
- Increase referee retention rates because your referees will no longer feel ignored. We will build their confidence and passion
- Increase referee performance on the field of play. Your parents will be saying ‘Great! We want him/her for our match’ as opposed to ‘Oh no, not that ref again’
- Increase your supply of qualified referees. Don’t lower your standards because you’re short handed.
- Build a world-class referee program. When other leagues come to town to play, they will be saying “Hey, these refs are good!”
